A cozy way to keep your screen awake

Embers is a free online tool that stops your screen from turning off. Light the fire and your computer, laptop, or phone stays awake — no download, no extension, no signup. It works in any modern browser on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, and Android.

How does it keep my computer awake?

Embers uses your browser's built-in screen wake lock. While the fire is lit and this tab is on screen, the browser politely asks your device not to sleep, dim, or lock the display. Nothing is installed — the lock is released the moment you tuck the fire in or close the tab.

How do I stop my screen from turning off?

Click the fire to light it, then choose how long it should burn: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, until a specific time, or all night. Your screen stays awake until the fire burns out, and your normal sleep settings take over again afterwards.

Does it work on Mac and Windows?

Yes. Embers works in Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox on Mac, Windows, and Linux — and on iPhone and Android too, as long as the browser stays open on screen. There's nothing to download or configure.

Why did my screen go to sleep anyway?

The wake lock only holds while this tab is visible in the foreground. If you switch tabs, minimize the window, or lock your device, the browser releases the lock — that's a browser rule, not ours. Come back to the tab and the fire re-lights the lock automatically. Closing a laptop lid always wins, too.

Is it free and private?

Completely free, with no account and no signup. Everything happens on your device, and putting the fire out — or simply closing the tab — instantly hands sleep control back to your computer.
